Monday 4th October :
Day one ... lucky for me i had planned ahead and sorted out everything that needed urgently to be organized before the fast started .. or so i thought! As part of a group project we had to meet with the quality manager of Dublin Bus, the meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, however little did i know that Dublin Bus were trying to ring me all Monday to change the person i was supposed to meet, this led to a very confusing couple of hours in which i had to resort to email to give my home phone number and get in touch with them that way, very professional! Anyway everything worked out in the end and the meeting was scheduled for the same time and same place.
So the first mini crisis was averted, only for the rest of the day to be a series of not being able to find anyone when i needed to, simple things like going to the gym, meeting up with people in college and finding out where people where for lunch turned into a vast adventure around the college hoping to bump into someone who knew or had seen whoever i was looking for, i admit i probably came across as a bit strange ... or that i was playing a giant game of Cluedo, funny for others ... not for me!Tuesday 5th October:
The thing i most feared would happen happened, que long distance girlfriend trying to get in touch with me, me with no phone ........ and having forgot to tell her i was doing the fast in the first place, as she would say, i was living up to my name "Petit Con Irlandais". Whereas i was running around the college going to class and trying to get some work done, in her head i was getting a massage from four beautiful women on a beach in Hawaii and my phone had slipped into my Gin and Tonic by the pool, try digging your way out of that one!Anyway i survived thanks to email and Skype later in the evening, again thank god i had not given up everything, i would have been completely lost!
Wednesday 6th:
So having learned my lesson from the last two days I was fully prepared for my last day, girlfriend informed, meetings planned, lunch set, gym time set and most importantly alarm clock on watch set!
I could go on about how it was the end of the world, but you know what? It wasn't, i made it to college as normal, my social life didn't fall apart and i didn't spend half of my day walking aimlessly through the college looking for people. You could even say that my life was more organized without my phone, i knew that if i had agreed to meet someone at a certain place at a certain time that they would be there, no last minute texts saying they couldn't make it for whatever reason, people knew i didn't have my phone so even a social meeting became an obligation (as it should be) not an option!
So will i be giving up my phone forever? Probably not, do i think businesses could be as effective without mobile phones, not really, but is it the end of the world? Not at all, with a little bit of organization and dedication life can go on as normal and people take the places and times they agree to meet with people a little more seriously and actually turn up on time. Maybe its just the fact that people have an easy way out most of the time that they change plans at the last second, personally i found it a lot more interesting when i didn't have my phone!
Still there is no way i could give up all technology, for me and my lifestyle its just not possible, but i really do take my hat off to anyone who did it even for just 3 days!
